#128 "Almost Human Porpoise" - The Grizzly Bear Egg Café
Mar 29, 2011
We're thrilled to kick off our Batman movie discussion this week on The Grizz. Saddle up because Clayton and Mike start with the 1960's 'Batman: The Movie' in this episode. Next week is the 1989 Michael Keaton Bat film. Also the guys talk about tons of superhero news: Wonder Woman casting, X-Men First Class, and Zack Snyder's new Superman film which begins filming in August. All that and Clayton starts drinking carrot juice.

That 60s Batman movie was fantastic. So much enjoyment from start to finish, my favorite part was when they were going over the details of the shark attack and deduced which villains had been involved. "But wait! It happened at the sea... Sea. C for Catwoman!"
Or later on with the riddles, "what weighs six ounces, sits in a tree, and is very dangerous?" "A sparrow with a machine gun!" "Yes, of course."
When I watched the reruns of Batman on FX when I was a kid, I had no idea it was supposed to be campy. I usually preferred super hero action figures to comic books, so most of what I was familiar with were my dad's old Spider-Man comics written in the 60s-70s in Stan Lee's over the top style. I just thought that's what cool super heroes were supposed to be like and it was awesome.
Nowadays we have all these comics and movies written with horrible melodrama or taken to the point of seriousness that the whole effect is lost on me. I've liked some of the super hero movies we've gotten in the past few decades, but 60s Batman is probably still the one I get the most pure enjoyment out of. There was such attention to detail with the dialogue, characters, props, overt and subtle jokes, the great soundtrack, I think it's a really underrated film that today's movies with their heavy emphasis on CGI special effects and often nothing else should take note of.
Enjoyed the podcast.
I went out and found the easiest way to watch the Batman films without spending too much money.
Went to Walmart & bought the 4 pack that has the 4 films from the late 80s-90s. :p
Anyway, keep up the great work as usual.
Talk about Guilt Pleasure, I think you just admitted to liking Smallville.
Nobody ever admits to liking Smallville. People tend to act like they are too cool for it.
I am glad to find someone else likes it to. I am a new listener so this might be commonplace, but I found it striking.
The 60's Batman is campy, sure. But I like the fact that is played straight and that there is no nod and a wink to the audience to show that everyone knows how it's goofy and a big joke that they're in on. It's endearing the same way the 60's version of Dragnet was. That kind of sincerity in the cynical, self-aware modern age warms my heart.
It's a shame the TV series is not available on DVD because of the rights issues. But I know many have been uploaded to YouTube (look for user FanOfBats). I feel like watching one right now... maybe one with Julie Newmar.
